Master Potter Since 1997
Master craftsman John Ryan's journey began in 1993 at the prestigious Thomastown pottery school in Co. Kilkenny, where he graduated top of his class. After apprenticing with Ireland's leading studio potters, John travelled extensively through the Middle East and Japan, studying ancient ceramic traditions and refining his craft.
In 1997, John established his studio in the rural heartland of south County Sligo, where the dramatic Atlantic coastline and wild landscapes of the west of Ireland provide daily inspiration.
When Karl Purdy approached John in 2011 about creating pottery designed specifically for Aeropress and specialty brewing, John brought his international training and 15+ years of experience to solve a problem no Irish potter had tackled: functional ceramics engineered for modern coffee brewing.
Every piece at Coffeeangel is hand-thrown by John on the potter's wheel, fired to high stoneware temperatures, and finished with food-safe glazes that John formulates himself - a rare skill among contemporary potters.
