Precision Is Essential for Specialty Coffee
The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) emphasises that **consistency** is the foundation of great coffee — and that consistency requires the right tools. Precision scales let you replicate successful recipes (dose accuracy to ±0.1g). Calibrated tampers ensure even extraction across the puck. Quality milk pitchers provide control over microfoam texture. These aren't luxury items — they're fundamental to unlocking the full potential of specialty-grade beans.

Coffee Accessories FAQ
What accessories are essential for specialty coffee at home?
The three essentials for any brewing method are:
1. Precision scale — Measure coffee dose and water volume to ±0.1g for recipe consistency
2. Grinder — Fresh grinding is critical (see our Coffee Grinders collection)
3. Quality brewer — Appropriate for your method (see our Coffee Brewers collection)
For espresso specifically, add a calibrated tamper (like The Force Tamper or PT2) to ensure even puck preparation and consistent extraction. Advanced home baristas also benefit from TDS refractometers (DiFluid R2) to measure extraction yield and dial in recipes scientifically.
Why do I need a scale for coffee? Can't I just use a scoop?
Volume measurements (scoops) are unreliable because coffee density varies widely by roast level, origin, and grind size. A "scoop" of light Ethiopian coffee weighs significantly less than a scoop of dark Brazilian coffee.
Weight (grams) is the only consistent measurement. The SCA Golden Ratio recommends 1:15 to 1:18 (coffee:water by weight). For example, 18g of coffee with 270ml of water = 1:15 ratio. Without a scale accurate to ±0.1g, you cannot replicate successful brews or troubleshoot extractions.
Recommended: Timemore Black Mirror scales offer 0.1g accuracy, built-in timer, and auto-tare — everything needed for pour-over, espresso, or French press.
What tamp pressure should I use for espresso?
The specialty coffee consensus is ~25kg (55lbs) of consistent, level pressure — but consistency matters more than exact force. Most baristas cannot reliably apply the same pressure manually across hundreds of shots.
Calibrated tampers solve this:
• The Force Tamper — Spring-loaded system that "clicks" at 25kg, eliminating guesswork
• PT2 Precision Tamp 2 — Automatic tamper with 25kg pressure and perfectly level compression every time
These tools reduce channeling (uneven water flow through the puck), improve shot-to-shot consistency, and let you focus on grind size and dose rather than tamp technique.
What's the difference between stainless steel and Teflon-coated milk pitchers?
Stainless steel pitchers (EDO Barista Lined, standard finish):
• Classic choice, excellent heat conductivity
• Inside measurement lines visible for consistent milk volumes
• Easier to feel milk temperature through the pitcher wall
• Best for: Learning latte art, tactile temperature sensing
Teflon-coated (black) pitchers (EDO Black Teflon):
• Non-stick coating reduces milk residue buildup
• Slightly slower heat transfer (less risk of scalding milk too quickly)
• Aesthetic appeal for home setups
• Best for: Easy cleaning, visual contrast when pouring latte art
Borosilicate glass pitchers (Precision Pour Glass):
