The Misak communities trade crops with each other as their varying elevations dictate what their lands can produce. The Misak, (or Guambiano in Spanish) indigenous people, and few other peoples, are the original inhabitants of much of Southwestern Colombia. They are struggling to preserve their cultural identity due to armed conflict, drug trafficking, and general underdevelopment. Community members are displaced or migrate from their farms in search of opportunities in urban centers. Specialty coffee has the potential to help the Misak preserve their cultural identity by offering community members - especially youth - a viable economic alternative.
