Built in 1972, Butegana was the first washing station in Burundi. It is in the Kayanza Commune in the Kayanza province and lies at an altitude of 1,612m. Many years ago, Rwandan and Burundian troops fought against each other in this region. Hence the name 'Butegana' meaning "place of attack".
This washing station collects cherries from around 2,900 local coffee farmers spread over the 24 neighbouring "collines" or hills. During the harvest season, all coffee cherries are selectively handpicked and hand sorted. Most families only have 200 to 250 trees, and harvesting is done almost entirely by the family.
This bright, clean, sweet coffee has notes of orange zest, blackberry jam and milk chocolate.
